Slant: Bold Asian American Images

Going to be in Houston at the end of May? You can check out my short film here:

Slant: Bold Asian American Images
Aurora Picture Show
May 30 - June 1, 2008

What do missed connections, using bananas as weapons, and a little girl’s persistence in selling cookies have in common? Nothing – until we brought them together for Slant. For the 8th year, Aurora Picture Show presents Slant, an eclectic showcase of the best in emerging Asian American cinema. Slant combats tired stereotypes of Asian Americans with quirky comedies, compelling visions, and fresh perspectives on the Asian American experience. In other words, no Long Duk Dong.

Different film programs screen on Friday, May 30 and Sunday, June 1. Friday’s program of experimental and narrative films weaves together the humorous and the poetic. Sunday’s documentary program tells stories of people holding on even when outside forces try to tear them apart.

On Saturday evening, May 31, join us for Getting to Nobu: Show and Tell with Nobu Adilman. Canadian filmmaker Nobu Adilman will present a special show-and-tell screening with excerpts from his TV shows “Food Jammers” and “Invention Nation,” as well as a presentation of his short films, among some other surprises.

And don’t forget to pick up a copy of the Best of Slant DVD, featuring 8 films from past years of Slant.

ABOUT AURORA PICTURE SHOW

Founded in 1998, the Aurora Picture Show is the only facility of its kind in the Southwest. Art in America has called it “one of the most interesting and unusual new spaces in Houston.” Housed in a 1924 converted church building in the Heights this 100 seat theater is part of the micro-cinema movement that began in the mid-1990’s. Aurora supports non-commercial independent and artist-made film, video and new media artists through fifty programs a year. Aurora’s human scale promotes a meaningful and community-oriented exchange between artists and audiences.

Aurora Picture Show is funded by its stellar membership, Houston Endowment, Inc, The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, Brown Foundation, Texas Commission on the Arts, The City of Houston through the Houston Arts Alliance, the Nightingale Code Foundation, the Oshman Foundation, the Cullen Trust for Performing Arts, and National Endowment for the Arts. Aurora Picture Show is a proud member of Fresh Arts Coalition.
