Discussing the "inner child" with children

  • 7yo: Dad, what's an inner child?
  • Me: Well, it's that every grownup has some part of them that still thinks like a kid. So "inner child" is just what you call that part--it's not like there's really a child inside--
  • 7yo: Do I have an inner child?
  • Me: Well, no--you're already a child, so you don't need--
  • 9yo: Not everyone has an inner child. Like, really mean teachers don't.
  • Me: Oh, I'm sure that even mean teachers have an inner child. They just don't show you that part--
  • 9yo (solemnly): Or really religious people.
